So, you think you want to be a youth football coach? What ideas to you have about coaching youth football? Have you ever coached before? Coaching a youth football team is not easy. Football is a complicated sport, especially if you coach in a competitive pee wee tackle league.
Are you ready to commit at least 10 to 20 hours a week to be your best and teach your young football players? Can you pass a background check? Most youth football leagues require a background check each year. Are you ready for the parent issues? Coaching today is not about the players, but the parents. And to be honest, I am a bad sport's parent too. Just like Doctors make bad patients. Well, that's another article.

A big decision after you become head coach of a youth football team is who to put in charge of your offense. I recommend it is either you or a close friend that eat and breathe football. You need a football "guy" at the offensive coordinator position. And, they must be on your team. Otherwise it will be a struggle. I have been both and I prefer offense, but since my son plays QB, I am the defensive coordinator.
Like the offensive coordinator assistant coaching position, your defensive coordinator must be a die hard football affianado. Defense wins games. And this is a fact. If the other team doesn't score then the worst outcome is a tie. So plan accordingly. The defensive coordinator must be aggressive and not sit back. Choose another close friend or person that you trust.
The Special Teams assistant coach can be a junior coach but with the guidance of the head coach. If you use the head coach on special teams, then the team knows that you are serious about special teams. And, in youth football, special teams will win many games because many teams do not practice special teams. So put an organized coach in this position that will work hand in hand with the head coach.
The Team Manager position is very important in your organization. My team manager handles all the parent / coach issues. Choose wisely. Do not choose a minimum player parent as your team manager, this will be politically unsuccessful. You don't need the head ache.
