Coaching youth football offenses is challenging.  Its take awhile to implement a youth football offense.  The pee wee players are not NFL superstars and their memories and attention spans are low.  From my stand point, you must choose an offense that fits your talent.  If you do not have a speed demon, then the outside sweeps are not going to be effective.  If you are lucky, then you can open up the field.  I have been successful with both speed and no speed.  But, you must adjust and coach to your player's talent.  I tell my coaches that if we do not have the talent, then we must coach even harder.

Over the years, I have run the following offensive formations;

  1. The Beast
  2. I Formation
  3. Stack
  4. Straight T
  5. Spin and Double Wing Variation I call Speed

The two that have worked very well are the Beast and the Spin.  The Beast formation works great of you do not have a lot of running back talent.  Maybe one of two backs that can carry the ball and gain positive yardage.  The Spin formation work great if you have one of the fastest kids in the league.  This is a wide open spread offense and is fun to watch if you have the talent.  We also ran a double tight spin which is very similar to the double wing offense and an Offense names The Toss by Jerry Vallotton.  What's great about the Spin is a can easily move into an I formation and run the same plays with power lead blocking.

Dale Weiner helped create the Spin Offense.  He spent 27 years as the Head Coach for Catholic High School in Baton Rouge.  In 2001, his staff installed the Spin Offense.  Since its inception his teams have averaged over 28 points a game.  You can find a ton of information about the Spin Offense below at American Football Monthly.
